CVSA tells DOT to rethink HOS proposal
BETHESDA, Md. (June 5, 2000) Ð A group representing motor vehicle enforcement officials from across North America told the U.S. Dept. of Transportation that its proposed hours-of-service regime “is complex at best” and would be difficult to enforce effectively.
A repreSpeaking at the U.S. DOTÕs first public meeting on the proposal, Sgt. Donald Bridge of the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance told department officials that new HOS rules “will require added resources for enforcement and training if it is to be implemented in a uniform way.”
Bridge also said CVSA members have prided themselves on uniform enforcement of the vehicle inspection program throughout North America and want to do the same for any new hours-of-service rule despite added resource and training requirements.
While calling upon DOT to develop the best scientific data possible to support its new proposal, CVSA also is surveying its members for additional data that will help shape a rule to enhance safety for commercial motor vehicle drivers and the driving public.
