DeFosset out as Navistar’s truck group president

CHICAGO (June 21, 1999) — In an abrupt shift in leadership, Navistar International Corp. Truck Group president Don DeFosset has left company and been replaced by the division’s No. 2 executive.

DeFosset left “to pursue other opportunities,” according to a company statement. Before he came to Navistar three years ago, DeFosset was executive vice-president at Mack Trucks.

Steve Keate, formerly group vice-president and general manager of the company’s heavy-vehicle business, will take DeFosset’s place effective immediately, the company said. Keate joined Navistar in March 1995.

Keate is seen as an architect of Navistar’s five-point truck strategy and other programs aimed at increasing shareowner value. These programs contributed significantly to the dramatic increase in the company’s stock price, which has risen approximately 475% during Keate’s tenure, according to Navistar chairman, president, and CEO John Horne.

“Steve’s tough mind and collegial style personify the kind of leaders we’re developing for the future,” Horne said.

Keate said his initial focus is to drive operational excellence and improve awareness of the International brand.

“We have exceptional products, strong customer loyalty, and the best distribution channel in the industry,” Keate said. “We need to improve our understanding of our customers’ business and with this knowledge, develop unique product and service solutions aimed at providing them with a competitive advantage.”
