Detroit-Windsor Tunnel to get $4 million in upgrades

DETROIT, (July 21, 2004) — The Detroit and Windsor Tunnel Corp. has announced that it plans about $4 million in improvements over the next three years to speed up traffic and ease delays on the U.S. side of the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel.

The company says it is currently upgrading all the toll booths, and hopes to have the first one open by November. Some booths will be completely electronic, while others will be staffed. Eventually all the booths will have electronic capabilities, a company spokesperson said.

The company said it plans to mirror the electronic booths in Windsor in 2005.

Other improvements include a larger turning area for commercial vehicles, and digital security cameras inside and outside the tunnel.

The tunnel and the Ambassador Bridge are the two road linking Detroit and Windsor.
