DHL introduces temperature-controlled parcel service

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. (Sept. 13, 1999) — DHL Worldwide Express, the largest international air express shipper, introduced a new packaging technology that allows shippers to maintain specific temperatures when shipping perishable goods.

The new “ThermoExpress” package is an improvement over the dry ice usually used because it uses a refrigerant matched to the specific temperature requirement of items being shipped, such as food, pharmaceutical and medical products, a spokesman for Redwood City, Calif.-based DHL told Reuters.

The refrigerant maintains constant temperatures ranging from 8 degrees Celsius (46.4 degrees F) to minus 20 degrees Celsius (minus 4.00 degrees F) for up to four days in transit.

DHL charges an extra $25-$85 US for ThermoExpress packages, depending on size and destination of the package, DHL said.
