Drivers getting pulled for roadside MTO survey

TORONTO — The Ontario Ministry of Transportation has begun interviewing truck drivers at roadside for the 2007 Commercial Vehicle Survey (CVS).

The CVS is a roadside survey conducted with truck drivers, who are randomly selected by MTO Carrier Enforcement Officers. It is conducted at truck inspection stations and truck lay-bys on a 24-hour basis on all days of the week to provide a robust statistically accurate representation of trucking activities.

Surveying is conducted at more than 100 sites throughout the province including border crossings, 400 series highways and other key highway corridors. The 2005-2007 surveying in Ontario is expected to collect information on more than 50,000 truck trips, according to the Ontario Trucking Association.

The campaign began March 20th at the Oakville Truck Inspection Station. Overall, surveying is planned for about 80 sites across the province until early August.

The data and information from the survey is used to provide input into provincial planning initiatives including bi-national border crossing studies, highway studies and environmental assessments. It provides input into the MTO Freight and Carrier Safety policy development and programs.
