During peak season, the hits keep coming at UPS
ATLANTA (Dec. 23) — Do customers use the Internet to track shipments?
Do they ever, according to United Parcel Service. The world’s largest package delivery company expected more than one-million daily tracking requests on its web site yesterday, the busiest shipping day of the year.
UPS said it planned to deliver more than 17 million packages yesterday, more than 50% higher than its average daily delivery volume. Customers can track packages via the UPS website or by using UPS OnLine software.
The company expects to deliver more than 95 million packages during Peak Week, which runs from Thursday, Dec. 17, through Christmas Eve.
UPS said it will handle an estimated 295 million packages this holiday season.
In anticipation of the surge in volume, UPS hired an additional 90,000 seasonal workers, increasing its workforce by a third. During Peak Week, UPS is using 13,000 additional drivers and 30 additional leased jets. About 975 flights will take off every day — up from an average of 500 flights per day.
