Dynamic route guidance gets a boost

WASHINGTON, D.C. (Nov. 29, 1999) — ITS America, the non-profit group promoting Intelligent Transportation Systems, convened a forum to accelerate the use of dynamic route guidance in the United States.

At the forum’s initial meeting, ETAK and Navigation Technologies proposed to make their traffic location codes and traffic location reference tables, respectively, available for traffic applications at a nominal charge.

In addition, CUE Corp. agreed to fund the development of a translation table linking the databases of the two companies. CUE also agreed to make the translation table available at nominal charge.

The committee includes about 40 representatives of automobile manufacturers as well as electronics, software, information services, and wireless companies.

ITS America Chair Joseph Giglio said, “We are pleased to see so many companies participate in this forum. We are also impressed by the proposals of NavTech, ETAK, and CUE to make available to the public what would otherwise be proprietary information. This type of cooperation is necessary to move towards deployment of real-time traffic information in vehicles.”
