Eaton shifts high-torque transmissions into production
KALAMAZOO, Mich. (Nov. 1, 1999) — Eaton Corp. has introduced two new transmissions to handle engines with torque ratings exceeding 2000 pound feet.
Already in production: the new Eaton Fuller 13-speed RTLO-20913A with a torque rating of 2050 pound feet. Coming in January: the new 18-speed RTLO-22918B, which will handle 2250 pound feet.
Both transmissions use Eaton’s low-inertia technology and have new advanced lubrication systems that use a special filter to provide cleaner oil directly to the gears and bearings. The filter, which functions for the life of the lube, is located on the transmission for easy access.
Other features include:
* An internal output shaft seal system that is engineered to improve seal life and eliminate the potential for seal damage during yoke removal.
* A higher capacity output shaft that accommodates higher engine torque.
* A spool-type air splitter valve system that improves performance and reliability.
* A dual supported range shift bar for improved durability.
* Design, material and manufacturing treatments that are focused on improving gearing and bearing reliability, including helical gears in the auxiliary sections for quieter operation and increased durability.
* Enhanced cooling with a standard oil-to-water heat exchanger that provides more consistent temperature reduction through the truck’s operating range and is less vulnerable to road damage, as compared to air-to-oil type heat exchangers.
The RTLO-20913A has a 16.9 to 1 overall reduction and overdrive ratios of 0.73 and 0.86.
The RTLO-22918A comes with a 19.7 to 1 overall reduction and overdrive ratios of 0.73 and 0.86.
