Eaton to build transmission plant in Mexico

CLEVELAND, Ohio (June 3) — Eaton Corp. will spend $100 million US to build a new transmission manufacturing plant in Mexico in order to meet surging demand for heavy-duty vehicles. Selection of the manufacturing site will be announced shortly, the company said.

Construction will begin this year and continue in phases over the next five years. It will be a “primary manufacturing facility,” according to Eaton, with complete transmission fabrication and assembly capability.

The plant’s capacity will be incremental to existing North American transmission plants, the company said.

The new plant will also complement Eaton’s Roadranger regional sales and service facility headquartered in Monterrey, Mexico, which serves the new product and aftermarket needs of its Mexican customers.

Earlier this year, Eaton introduced a new transmission line called the Lightning Series. Available in July as a fleet-oriented 10-speed, the Lightning weighs 120 pounds less that Eaton’s Super 10 transmission. It is packaged in a single case, with an integrated oil cooler, no exposed air lines, and on-board electronics to automate shifting.
