Emons Transportation Group Announces New Bulk Transfer Facility
YORK, Pa. (June 27, 2000) — Emons Transportation Group, Inc., announced on June 21 the opening of its newly built bulk transfer facility in York, Pa., owned and operated by its subsidiary, Emons Logistics Services, Inc.
The $1.5 million project was funded equally by Emons and a grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.
“This new lighted, fenced and paved state-of-the-art facility has 70 railcar spots and is fully equipped with a 70 foot truck scale, rail scale and steam heating capabilities, as well as a highly trained staff ensuring hassle-free transportation services for its customers, some of which may only be able to receive raw materials by truck,” said Phillip A. DuPont, vice president of Emons and president and CEO of ELS.
“This is clearly a big win for off-line customers in south-central and eastern Pennsylvania because those customers not having direct rail access benefit from low-cost, long-haul rail transportation coupled with the flexibility of local truck delivery. With easy access to routes 30, 83, 81 and the Pennsylvania Turnpike, I-76, this new bulk transfer facility hopes to penetrate the markets within a 50-plus mile radius of York, Pennsylvania,” said DuPont.
Robert Grossman, chairman and president, concluded, “Within the next several years, we expect to handle over 2,000 railcars per year, equating to 8,000-10,000 truckloads, of bulk commodities such as food oils, sweeteners and various other bulk commodities, including chemicals and plastics. In this way, we hope to substantially increase our rail-to-truck transload volumes. The success of this new facility will be obtained by collaborating with our three Class I partners, Canadian Pacific Railway, CSXT and NS.”
Emons Transportation Group, Inc., is a rail freight transportation and distribution services company serving the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast regions of the United States and Quebec, through its Pennsylvania and New England/Quebec operations. The firm currently owns five short line railroads, operates rail/truck transfer facilities and a rail intermodal terminal, and provides its customers with warehousing and logistics services for the movement and storage of their freight.
