The 112-inch BBC market is an important one for truck makers. At 112 inches you can straddle the line between heavy and medium-duty work, regional or short-haul service, on the road or in the city. With the right design, you can cover a lot of ground.
So it’s no surprise that Freightliner Trucks wants to bolster two of its workhorse product lines–the popular Columbia and the burgeoning M2 Business Class–with 112-inch BBC
versions starting this fall.
The Columbia 112 joins the 120-inch BBC configuration launched in 1999. “We’ve designed the Columbia 112 to be an efficient partner for (regional) operations, bulk haulers, less-than-truckload applications, inter-city delivery, and distribution trucking operations,” says Mark Lampert, Freightliner’s senior vice-president of sales. It will come with a day cab or a range of sleeper-cab options.
A leaf-and-a-half spring suspension, rated at 12,000 pounds, is standard on the front axle; the rears are available with ratings of 40,000 pounds, 46,000 pounds, and 52,000 pounds. Air-ride is an option front or back.
The Columbia 112 will come equipped with a choice of Mercedes-Benz MBE4000 or Caterpillar engines with horsepower ratings to 470.
Freightliner’s M2 112, with GVW ratings up to 66,000 pounds, is the largest and highest capacity model in the company’s M2 Business Class truck line (106-inch and 100-inch BBC versions are available now). Freightliner will offer front axles rated from 12,000 pounds to 20,000 pounds and rears up to 46,000 pounds. Standard is the Mercedes-Benz MBE4000 diesel in horsepower ratings to 450 hp, with Caterpillar engines as options. Your transmission choices are the Eaton Fuller AutoShift and Eaton Fuller manual 10- or 13-speed gearboxes, along with Allison HD series automatics.
For the comfort of your driver or work crew, you can order the M2 112 as a truck or tractor with a regular cab, extended cab, or crew cab. Otherwise, the 112 body has all the benefits of the rest of the M2 line-a sloped hood, lowered dash, expansive, 2,500-square-inch windshield, and tight turning radius.
