FBI warns of terrorist plot to use tanker trucks in attacks
WASHINGTON (June 24, 2002, via truckinginfo.com) — The FBI issued a warning Friday to law enforcement agencies warning of a possible terrorist plot to use tanker trucks to attack Jewish neighborhoods and synagogues.
According to wire services, news of the warning came from a bureau official wishing to remain unidentified. Another unidentified official said the warning was not based on a particular threat, but rather on interviews of captured al-Qaida and Taliban fighters.
The interviews did not specify a particular location or time.
AP reported the notice to law enforcement agencies said: “Law enforcement agencies are encouraged to make contact with appropriate Jewish community representatives and officials and trucking and fuel delivery facilities that operate fuel tanker trucks or commercial fueling stations and emphasize the need to report suspicious activities or persons.”
Officials believe al-Qaida terrorist have already used tankers for terrorist plots overseas.
Investigators are also investigating a Nevada man’s claim that he picked up a conversation in Arabic over his cellular phone during which someone threatened to “hit them on the day of freedom.” The FBI says it has launched a full-scale investigation to determine if there actually is a threat.
The conversation was allegedly overheard by an Arab immigrant who has been residing in the U.S. since 1976. He said he believes the men were talking about July Fourth.
