FedEx Ground honours Toronto linehaul drivers; 14 million miles without an at-fault accident

PITTSBURGH (July 9, 2002) — FedEx Ground, North America’s second-largest small-package ground carrier and a subsidiary of FedEx Corp., presented its President’s Challenge award to 10 Toronto-based linehaul owner-operators and their 26 drivers for setting a company record of miles traveled without an at-fault accident.

Since July 30, 1997, the contractors and drivers have logged more than 14,386,194 miles — a streak which continues today — without a single at-fault accident. They drive approximately 75,000 miles each week while providing regular service to FedEx Ground facilities in Ottawa; Montreal; Winnipeg, Manitoba; Toledo, Ohio; Buffalo, N.Y.; and Stoney Creek, Windsor, Oshawa, and Kitchener, Ont.

Raymond Mercuri, maintenance and safety manager for FedEx Ground Ltd., the Canadian subsidiary of FedEx Ground, said the drivers’ performance is remarkable considering the weather, traffic, and road conditions they routinely face.

“The key to this success is their attention to safe driving habits, meticulous pre- and post-trip inspections and the fact that we have had zero turnover in this outstanding group of contractors,” said Mercuri.
