First group of Cummins Westport engines get real workout

VANCOUVER, B.C. (Nov. 28, 2001) — Cummins Westport Inc., a joint venture between Cummins and Westport Innovations Inc. of Vancouver, B.C. have announced the completion of the first multiple-unit delivery of heavy-duty trucks using the low-emissions ISX-G heavy-duty natural gas engine the two companies have been working on.

The delivery involved the last of 14 Peterbilt heavy-duty trucks to Sanitary Fill Co. in San Francisco, a subsidiary of Norcal Waste Systems Inc. The first of the Norcal trucks was delivered in August and already has logged more than 32,000 kilometers. Sanitary Fill has ordered nine more trucks with ISX-G engines for delivery in the second half of 2002.

The ISX-G is Cummins Westport’s natural gas version of the 15-litre Cummins ISX heavy-duty diesel truck engine. The ISX-G, the first product with Westport HPDI technology, demonstrates diesel-like power and fuel efficiency but with lower emissions than comparable diesel fuel engines and with lower fuel costs in areas where natural gas is less expensive than diesel fuel.
