First mandatory use of AES begins March 2002
WASHINGTON, D.C. (Aug. 2, 2001) — Mandatory use of the Automated Export System (AES) by certain U.S. exporters will begin March 2002, as the United States begins to phase in a new system for managing electronic customs documents.
Shippers who are sending munitions or goods subject to export license are the first groups to be required to use AES. While AES remains optional for other exports, legislation to make AES mandatory for all exports has cleared the House, and is currently before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
Draft regulations for mandatory AES use should be issued for public comment some time next month.
