Following a year of record profit, layoffs hit PACCAR

BELLEVUE, Wash. (March 10, 2000) — Citing a decline in the market for heavy-duty trucks, PACCAR Inc. plans to lay off 300 workers at plants in the Seattle area at the end of this month.
The parent of Kenworth and Peterbilt trucks will cut production at its Kenworth plant in Renton from 50 trucks a day to 36, a spokeswoman told the Seattle Times.

PACCAR enjoyed record sales and profit in 1999, and added production capacity with the re-opening of a truck plant in Ste-Therese, Que., last fall.
