Former Kingsway pres, OTA chairman passes away

TORONTO — William Jim Hines, former Kingsway Transport president and chairman of the Ontario Trucking Association, has passed away peacefully at the age of 95.

“Jim was a man of great character and quiet resolute faith,” states an obituary by the OTA. “He achieved an admirable balance in his life between church, work and family.”

Remembered for his wry sense of humor, Hines was president of Kingsway Transports Ltd. and Senior VP Land Transportation for Canada Steamship Lines from 1952-1976. He was also a veteran of World War II serving with the Second Canadian Army from 1942-1945.

“Upon his retirement it was said ”What was important about Jim was the way he had of inspiring people with his unfailing good humour, his reasoned judgment, his patience and most important his example. Jim Hines was genuinely involved with people, and he provided leadership…not just for a single company, but for an entire industry,'” the obituary states.

His passions were golf and boating. He was one of the longest standing members of both St. George’s Golf Club and the R.C.Y.C. He will be remembered most for his insightful mind, his love of family and friends, and. He was a true ”gentle” man and will be greatly missed by those who knew him.

Hines was a beloved husband of Audrey and loving devoted father to Tony and wife Barbara; grandfather to Brenda Rowe, James Hines and Cynthia and husband John Sabol; great-grandfather to Lindsay and Lauren Rowe; and Eric, Kate and Liberty Sabol.

He is survived by his sister Barbara and husband Bob Childs. He was predeceased by his beloved wife Gunda, son Bill, and sister Dor Hopwood.

The family will receive friends and relatives on Wednesday, August 16 from 7-9 p.m. at Turner & Porter Funeral Home, 2357 Bloor St. West. A Memorial Service will be held at Turner & Porter on Thursday, August 17 at 1:30 p.m.
