Former truck driver named NS transport minister

HALIFAX — Well, Brooke Taylor better know something about roads and highways considering he spent five years traveling on them — sometimes at a snail’s pace.

Nova Scotia MLA Brooke Taylor is moving from Agriculture to Transportation and Infrastructure, which is considered a significant portfolio in that province.

Taylor, a former trucker who also operated a snowplow during the winter in his younger days, has been dubbed a "maverick" by local media. His strong opinions got him banished to the backbenches for 13 years under former Premier John Hamm until Rodney MacDonald became premier.

Taylor is said to be taking the portfolio at the perfect time. The province is expecting to spread around a lot of money on transportation and highways as Ottawa committed $634 million in 2007 for infrastructure funding.

Despite his experience plowing snow, he told media this week he doesn’t plan on hopping back in a truck next time one of those Nova Scotia blizzards blows through.
