Freightliner Launches Reman Program

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Freightliner’s Alliance Division has entered the US$3.5-billion North American reman market in a big way. In two new strategic partnerships, it will market Alliance-branded remanufactured truck parts made by Meritor Automotive and Southland Rebuilders of Charlotte, N.C.

Meritor will provide remanufactured carriers, which will hit Freightliner and Sterling dealer shelves in the second quarter of this year, as well as clutches and transmissions to follow later. Southland will produce reman starters and alternators for both light- and heavy-duty applications. The light-duty components are available now, the others coming in the second quarter. The three parties have equity positions in these new ventures.

In a separate arrangement, Alliance will also offer remanufactured 6.9- and 7.3-litre International engines. All of its reman parts will carry a full one-year warranty.

The division is looking ahead to a comprehensive line of reman parts for light-, medium-, and heavy-duty trucks.

The Alliance division manages the after-sale support of all Freightliner Corp. products, including American LaFrance fire trucks and Thomas Built buses as well as Freightliner and Sterling vehicles. In January it announced the launch of a private-brand parts line, which so far includes batteries, antifreeze, belts, hoses, heating and AC components, fuel/water separators, and chrome accessories.
