Freightliner recalls 133,000 Business Class trucks

PORTLAND, Ore. (Nov. 6, 2000) — Freightliner LLC is recalling 133,000 medium-duty and heavy-duty Business Class trucks equipped with air brakes because the brake pedal push rod, which activates the service brakes, may bend and later fracture, resulting in a loss of braking.

The recall affects trucks made since May 1991. The company will replace the brake pedal push rod with one of a larger diameter.

Freightliner is in the process of notifying customers. Priority is being given to dual steer vehicles, and then to vehicles in construction, refuse, fire and emergency applications.

Freightliner is advising truck owners to visually inspect their vehicles for bent brake pedal push rods (inspection procedures are available at the Freightliner’s Web site). If the rod is bent, owners should contact Freightliner’s Customer Assistance Center at 800-FTL-HELP or a dealer for replacement arrangements.

Representatives at the toll-free help line are available to answer questions about the recall.
