German official wants to cap long-haul trucking

BERLIN, Germany — European politicians are toppling over each other trying to come up with new environmentally conscious regulations for businesses and consumers.

One of the latest proposals, reports Bloomberg, comes from Germany’s Transport Minister, Wolfgang Tiefensee, who wants to introduce a limit on long-haul trucking as a way to reduce fuel and emissions.

In an interview with a local radio station, the Social Democrat said he supports capping road freight at a maximum radius of 100 kilometers (62 miles) from the shipper’s depot.

By forcing shorter highway delivery parameters, shippers would be enticed to switch to rail transport, he said.

The proposals will soon be discussed by German Cabinet.
