Gilles Belanger, former CTA president, dead at 60

MONTREAL (March 25, 2002) — Gilles Belanger, a prominent transportation lawyer and former president of the Canadian Trucking Association, died of a heart attack on March 22.

Belanger, 60, was president and chief executive officer of the Shipping Federation of Canada, based in Montreal.

Funeral services will be held tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. at the cathedral in La Pocatière, Que. A memorial service will follow at Mary, Queen-of-the-World Cathedral, in Montreal, on March 27 at 1 p.m.

Belanger was CTA president from 1991 until 1997, when the group was reorganized as a federation of seven provincial trucking associations. During his tenure, Belanger displayed an acumen for international affairs, providing representation for the Canadian trucking industry during the development of the North American Free Trade Agreement and other trade-related policies.
