GM, Ford, DaimlerChrysler set higher Q1 ’99 output

DETROIT — General Motors Corp., Ford Motor Co. and DaimlerChrysler AG are forecasting an 8% gain in North American car and truck production for the first quarter of 1999.

The automakers project 10% higher car production to 1,448,800 units, according to a Reuters report. Light truck output is scheduled to be up 7% to 2,049,500 for a total of 3,498,300 units.

DaimlerChrysler AG, which released its first quarter output plans Tuesday, said it expects to build 844,300 cars and light trucks, up 5% from the 1998 first period.

Last week GM, the world’s largest automaker, said it plans to make 1,473,000 cars and light trucks, up 7% from the 1998 first quarter.

No. 2 automaker Ford is projecting a 12% output rise to 1,181,000, including a 19% increase in light trucks production
