GM names Union Pacific lead rail transportation provider in U.S. West
OMAHA, Neb. (Aug.. 2, 2001) — Union Pacific Railroad announced yesterday that it has been selected by General Motors Corp. as its lead rail transportation provider in the western United States.
The new strategic partnership calls for Union Pacific to handle all of General Motors’ finished vehicle traffic in the West, totaling more than 2.5 million vehicles annually. Under the agreement, UP will expand its GM service to Southern California, Arizona, New Mexico and Oklahoma as well as to locations in Minnesota and the upper Midwest.
Union Pacific Railroad, a subsidiary of Union Pacific Corp., currently transports 75% of General Motors’ western finished vehicle business, which includes production at three plants in Mexico.
Under the multi-year agreement, Union Pacific will build or expand seven vehicle distribution facilities, make other facility improvements to permit around-the-clock vehicle unloading at all facilities and install a new, state- of-the-art vehicle management system at each location.
