Gold dust in the trash heap: Wilson Logistics opens waste haulage business in Las Vegas
LAS VEGAS (Jan. 4, 2002) — Wilson Logistics said it has opened a subsidiary in Las Vegas after signing a long-term contract to move trash from city transfer stations to an area landfill.
The new company, Wilson Logistics Nevada, reached a 10 + 10-year agreement with landfill operator Republic Services to move 1.7 million tonnes of solid waste per year, approximately 350 truckloads per day.
It is the parent company’s second major foray into waste haulage. In January 2001, Wilson Logistics began a 20-year contract to haul solid waste for the City of Toronto to a Republic-operated landfill in Michigan. By Jan. 1, 2003, Wilson will ship a total of 1.25 million tonnes of Toronto trash a year — approximately 160 truckloads per day. A similar five-year contract with the Region of Peel, which includes the heavily populated suburbs west of Toronto, begins July 1, 2002. That contract calls for 15 truckloads a day.
Wilson Logistics has built its transportation business on another commodity that is an indispensible part of life: food. The company started in 1937 delivering food to grocery stores, and now manages distribution and logistics for Sobey’s and A&P Canada, two of the largest grocers in Canada. It also supplies TL service with an emphasis on temperature-sensative freight.
