Gravel haulers to protest new weight limits in NB
CAP PELE, N.B. — As many as 50 gravel haulers contracted to the government have threatened to park their dump trucks to protest recent cuts to load limits, says the South-East New Brunswick Truckers Association.
According to Canadian Press, the dump truckers could shut down along Main Street in Cap Pele today.
The drivers are upset over lost payload after the province removed the weight allowance for gravel and asphalt haulers working for the government.
The trucking association’s president, Francis Murray, says that 10 to 50 trucks could take part in the protest, reports CP. It’s unclear how long the demonstration could last.
The owner-ops, who say they’re losing as much as $100 a day compared to last year, are demanding a meeting with Transportation Minister Denis Landry to discuss the situation. They are reportedly asking for a 15-percent raise in the rate per tonne.
