Heavy-duty LNG trucks to make debut at California ports

VANCOUVER, B.C. — Canadian alternative power company Westport Innovations says 20 of its liquefied natural gas-powered heavy-trucks will start rolling into the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach.

The Board of South Coast Air Quality Management District recently approved US$2.9 million acquisition.

Total Transportation Services of Los Angeles will replace 20 of its pre-1990 trucks with the 2006 CARB and EPA certified Westport LNG systems installed in Kenworth T800 trucks.

The funding support for TTSI’s LNG vehicle acquisition represents $144,000 per truck.

“Westport is proud to play a key role in helping the West Coast’s busiest ports improve air quality and do their part in the fight against global warming,” said Mike Gallagher, President and COO of Westport. “South Coast (SCAQMD) has been an important partner of Westport’s for some time and this funding is another important milestone.”

Earlier this year, both ports released a joint request for proposals for $22 million to solicit LNG truck projects.
