Hijacking On 401: Another driver assaulted and robbed on highway
MILTON, Ont. — Thieves not only stole a trailer carrying about $2 million worth of Hewlett Packard computer gear just off Hwy 401 in Southern Ontario last week, they hijacked the driver at gunpoint to do it.
The Indiana-based driver, who was bound with duct tape and thrown into his sleeper, awoke unharmed about 14 hours later in his rig, a spokesman for the Halton Regional Police told TodaysTrucking.com.
The driver reported to authorities that he had been at an eastbound Shell station near Tilbury, southwest of Chatham, at about 3:00 p.m., Wednesday when at least three assailants entered his cab and overtook him.
When he awoke early Thursday morning, the truck was near Milton and the 53-ft trailer and the contents were gone. The police are continuing their investigation.
The trailer is white and says Transportation Networks Carriers on the side. The plate number is P162530 and its identification number is 53702.
Chatham-Kent Police are leading the investigation with help from Halton Regional Police, the Canada Border Services Agency and other law enforcement agencies.
Anyone with any information is asked to call Chatham-Kent police major crime unit at 519-436-6616 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
The 401 corridor has seen numerous truck thefts in the past few months, including one case in which a driver was actually murdered before having his vanload of meat stolen.
