Hudson’s Bay Co. expands Expressway commitment
TORONTO (April 11, 2001) — Hudson’s Bay Co. has signed an agreement with Canadian Pacific Railway to move 16,000 trailers a year between Toronto and Montreal using the railroad’s Expressway intermodal service.
Trains will use an Expressway terminal built near the the retailer’s distribution centre in Scarborough, Ont. Four trains a day serve the terminal, which opened in February. Average transit time to Montreal is seven hours.
Hudson’s Bay estimated the service will replace 60 trucks a day.
The agreement is part of a larger partnership which has seen the railway become Hudson’s Bay Company’s exclusive rail carrier between Eastern and Western Canada.
Expressway is a roll-on/roll-off trailer-on-train service optimized for shorter distances than intermodal container services. Expressway operates scheduled service connecting Detroit, Toronto, and Montreal.
