Hurricane Bret brings busiest commercial crossing to a standstill

LAREDO, Tex. (Aug. 24, 1999) — Traffic at the U.S.-Mexico border bridges in Laredo, Tex., is at a halt this morning as U.S. Customs officials brace for the Rio Grande, swollen with rain from Hurricane Bret, to crest just below flood stage.

The U.S. Weather Service has issued a severe weather alert for most of Southern Texas, predicting heavy rainfall and severe winds despite the weakening storm.

The three bridges linking Texas with Mexico constitute the busiest commercial border crossing in the United States. Customs authorities warned of lengthy delays when the bridges reopen, likely sometime today.
