Hwy 400 widening work shelved

BARRIE, Ont. — Ontario’s project to widen a stretch of Hwy. 400 through Barrie has hit a roadblock.

According to the Barrie Examiner, improvements between the South Canal Bridge and Highway 89 and between Highway 89 and Highway 11, have still not commenced, despite the province being given environmental clearance in 2006.

“Highway 400 widening through Barrie and Innisfil is not currently on the five-year Southern Ontario Highways Program,” MTO spokesperson Bob Nichols told the paper.

The timing of future improvements will depend on property acquisition, funding availability and programming priority, he said.
