Hyundai affirms commitment to Bering

FRONT ROYAL, Va. (July 7, 2000) — Hyundai Motor Co. said it has no intention of moving its North American commercial truck business to Freightliner LLC despite DaimlerChrysler AG’s plans to buy 10% of South Korea’s biggest automaker.

Based in Front Royal, Va., Bering Truck Corp. is Hyundai’s exclusive commercial vehicle distributor in the United States, selling Hyundai-made class 3-8 vehicles with the Bering nameplate and North American powertrain components.

Bering has 46 full-service dealers in 24 states. It does not have distributors in Canada.

DaimlerChrysler announced last month that it wants to buy 10% of Hyundai Motor and establish a joint venture on commercial vehicles. DaimlerChrysler’s Freightliner LLC division builds and sells heavy trucks in North America under the Freightliner and Sterling nameplates.

In addition to its distribution of Hyundai’s commercial vehicles, Bering is completing its manufacturing and assembly facility in Front Royal with a planned capacity of 20,000 vehicles a year.
