Hyundai wants to support Bering network
Hyundai Motor Co. pledged to support dealers and customers of Bering Truck Corp. in light of the recent announcement by Bering that it is suspending operations and seeking legal action against Hyundai for dumping its alliance in favor of DaimlerChrysler.
Bering initially signed an agreement with Hyundai in 1998 to be the exclusive U.S. commercial distributor for the Korean company. It established a dealer network, built a truck assembly facility, and marketed the Bering truck line. But all that ended when DaimlerChrysler acquired a large stake in Hyundai last year, and Hyundai entered into a worldwide truck venture with them instead.
Now Hyundai is discussing a new warranty program with Bering dealers seeking ways in which it can help former Bering dealers to remain viable and is meeting representatives of the dealer network to explore other long-term strategies.
Hyundai and its parts affiliate Hyundai Mobis are also in discussions with Detroit Diesel to establish a United States commercial vehicle parts distribution network.
