Idle No More Protests Expected to Delay Ontario Crossings

TORONTO — The Canadian Trucking Alliance (CTA) said today that it has learned that the Idle No More protest is planning action at a couple of Ontario border crossings.

While exact details of the planned protests were unavailable, CTA said to expect protests to begin around noon on Saturday January 5.

The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and bridge authorities are currently negotiating with protesters, CTA said, and they expect the following crossings to be affected:

  • Blue Water Bridge and Cornwall: Closure of northbound and southbound lanes from noon – 1 on Saturday, January 5th

  • Peace Bridge: Protest will involve closure of one US-bound curb lane from 1 p.m. – 2 p.m. to conduct a parade. This will leave one US and one Canada-bound lane open normally.

  • Queenston/Lewiston: No firm confirmation of what the protest may look like here, but action is expected to occur around noon. OPP and the Niagara Falls Bridge Commission will take appropriate action should protests occur.

  • Media reports also suggest that the protest group will stage a march n Highway 403 in Hamilton Saturday afternoon.

The CTA advises keeping a close eye on media reports. Alternatively, you can keep the CBSA’s border crossing page open for updates or follow them on Twitter @CBSA_BWT
