Illinois blocks higher truck speed limits

CHICAGO — Legislation that would have increased the speed trucks can travel by another 10 mph on rural highways was defeated this week in the Illinois House.

The measure, which was previously approved by state lawmakers, would have raised the maximum speed from 55 miles an hour to 65. However, it was vetoed by Governor Rod Blagojevich. A subsequent House effort to override the veto got just 57 of the 71 votes it needed.

Blagojevich said the “public’s right to safety” should not be trumped by trucking companies’ desire to do business faster.

Several U.S. states have raised speed limits to 65 mph.
