Intersection at foot of MacKay Bridge to get facelift

HALIFAX — The Halifax-Dartmouth Bridge Commission hopes new infrastructure improvements to the approach to the MacKay Bridge will make life easier for motorists and truckers alike.

According to the Halifax Daily News, one of the province’s most congested intersections is on the verge of getting a multimillion-dollar upgrade.

The work, the paper reports, covers two distinct areas in the so-called Windsor Street Exchange:

Adding another lane and traffic signals to the single-lane roadway that funnels traffic turning left through the Windsor intersection on to the MacKay bridge; and installing two left-turning lanes from Windsor St. toward the Bedford Highway. The single lane running from the MacKay through to the Bedford Highway will also be doubled.

In a report to city council, Tanya Davis, a design engineer with the planning department, said the projects are part of road improvements to the entire Fairview Interchange.

The interchange improvements will be combined with the continuation of Lacewood Drive as a four-lane street all the way to Joseph Howe.
