Intra offers a more driver-friendly low-voltage disconnect

Intra Technologies
Intra Technologies has upgraded its existing low-voltage disconnect systems to make it easier for drivers to manage battery power consumption while the truck is parked.

The LVD monitors battery levels during key-off periods and automatically disconnects non-critical electrical power loads when battery voltage reaches critical levels. The new LVD has a timer that warns the driver with a series of audible alarms before power is shut off.

“It gives the driver more control over which power loads get turned off,” said Will Watson, vice-president, sales and marketing, for Intra Technologies. “The driver will hear a brief tone, then nothing for a minute. This will continue for a number of times before the LVD automatically disconnects power to the non-critical loads.” As the driver begins to switch off electrical loads — additional lights, appliances, etc. — the system automatically resets itself and the tones go away.

The goal of the LVD is to eliminate jumpstarts — about a $200 expense, the company said — and extend the life of the batteries. An LVD also extends battery life by protecting the batteries from a deep discharge. Watson said the industry average for battery life is 18 months or less. If deep discharges are avoided, batteries can last three years or more.

Intra’s new “driver-friendly” LVD is available as an aftermarket item through most truck dealers. The unit can be installed in any truck by a qualified technician in less than an hour. It will soon be available as an option on most new truck brands, Intra said.
