J-school student wins Rolf Lockwood scholarship award

TORONTO — Mimi Szeto, a second-year Journalism student at Ryerson University, is this year’s winner of the annual Rolf Lockwood Scholarship, a $1,000 award given to an undergrad with a minimum grade-point average of 3.0 for writing the best example of a magazine article focusing on business journalism.

More than 50 scholarships and prizes were presented to top students at all levels of the Ryerson journalism program at a special ceremony and Mimi was also the co-recipient of the Jim Cormier Memorial Award, which is given to the second-year student who has demonstrated academic excellence and has made an outstanding contribution to university life.

Future highwaySTAR? Mimi Szeto says the Rolf
Lockwood scholarship was a great birthday gift

The Rolf Lockwood award was established by Jim Glionna, founding partner and president of Newcom Business Media after the company’s editorial director Rolf Lockwood was presented with the Harvey S. Southam Lifetime Achievement Award by the Canadian Business Press two years ago.

Mimi Szeto turned 21 the day before the awards ceremony.

“It’s a great birthday gift,” she said, adding that the recognition cemented her decision to pursue a career in business journalism.
“It’s surprising when you realize all of a sudden that reading about interest rates and the economy can be extremely interesting,” the Scarborough, Ont., native said following the ceremony.

Mimi also mentioned, in receiving the award, that “now my parents might be okay with the fact that I’m not going to be a chemist.”

In addition to producing Todaystrucking.com, Newcom publishes Today’s Trucking, highwaySTAR, Transport Routier, Truck & Trailer, and other industry magazines. The company also owns and produces Truck World, CamExpo and ExpoCam trucking trade shows.
