KW Brings On FreedomLine

Kenworth has added ZF Meritor’s FreedomLine transmission, a fully automated mechanical transmission with no clutch pedal, to its data books, with the entire product line expected to follow. Peterbilt, Kenworth’s Paccar stablemate, made a similar addition last year.

With FreedomLine, drivers can choose from fully automatic or driver-controlled modes without clutching and shifting. Increased fuel economy should result, because the electronic control senses loads and knows when to skip shifts.

Kenworth will offer two models of FreedomLine: the 12-speed direct drive model rated at 1350 pound feet of torque, and the overdrive version at 1650. Separately, ZFMeritor will offer a 16-speed model.
