Larger for-hire carriers average 93% operating ratio

OTTAWA (Dec. 16, 1999) Ð Canada’s largest for-hire trucking companies generated operating revenues of $1.57 billion in the third quarter of 1999, a 3% increase in average revenue per carrier from the previous year, according to Statistics Canada.

The quarterly survey covers Canada-based trucking companies earning $25 million or more annually.

Operating expenses incurred by top carriers continued to hold steady, totaling $1.46 billion for the quarter. The average operating ratio — operating expenses divided by operating revenues — improved by one point to 0.93 compared with the 0.94 posted in the third quarter of 1998. Any ratio greater than 1.00 represents an operating loss.

The third quarter total was adjusted to reflect the addition of nine top carriers over the same period in 1998.
