Layoffs hit Wabash National again

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (Jan. 15, 2002) — Caught in a downward spiral of demand for semitrailers, Wabash National Corp. said it will lay off 480 workers at its main plant in Lafayette, Ind., until orders pick up again.

Last year, North America’s largest trailer producer let go nearly 600 workers. The latest cuts leave the company with a full-time workforce of about 2000, down from a high of 5000 in the late 1990s.

Wabash National produced 35,000 units in 2001, about 25% of the overall market but just half the 69,772 trailers it made during 2000.
