Let’s talk! New transponder allows PrePass, E-ZPass compatibility

LONG BEACH, Calif. (April 30, 2002) — The dominant providers of electronic toll collection and weigh-scale pre-clearance to the trucking industry in North America have agreed to make their services compatible using a common transponder.

HELP Inc., which manages the Pre-Pass pre-clearance network, and the New York State Thruway Authority, which operates the E-ZPass toll collection system, will begin issuing a new transponder called Ubiquity, introduced last week by MARK IV. Currently, transponders used for toll collection are not compatible with those used for weigh station pre-clearance.

A pilot project is expected to begin this summer.

The agreement will enable participating carriers to electronically comply with state safety and credential requirements at nearly 200 PrePass weigh stations in the United States. At the same time, HELP’s partnership with NYSTA will allow carriers to electronically pay tolls at nearly 400 E-ZPass toll plaza facilities in New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Massachusetts, and West Virginia.

“For more than five years I’ve been asking for this interoperability,” reported Dan Einwechter, president and CEO of Challenger Motor Freight in Cambridge, Ont., and the first carrier to volunteer for the project.

The pilot may be expanded to include border crossing applications and interoperability with other toll authorities, said HELP.
