MACK R-Model marks end of an era
More R-model chassis have been built and registered than any other
class-8 vocational vehicle–around 360,000 since 1965, figures the maker, Mack Trucks. With more than 200,000 still at work, the truck cemented Mack’s reputation for toughness and dependability in demanding job sites.
But after nearly four decades of service, the Mack RD, the last of the R series models, will be retired this year. To celebrate the end of an era, the company is offering a special edition of the vehicle, the R-Model Legend.
“We retire the RD with mixed emotions,” says Tom Kelly, Mack vice-president of marketing. On one hand, he notes, sales of its replacement, the Granite, are strong. But like all R models, the RD was a real workhorse.
“We want to send it out with a bang,” Kelly says. A special limited-edition R-Model Legend is available (pictured, left), tricked out with special paint, badges, chrome, and other amenities.
“A whole generation of successful businesses has been built on the back of these trucks,” Kelly says. “The R-Model Legend offers customers the opportunity to own and operate a piece of Mack’s 100-plus year history.”
