Manitoba raises speed limits on 83 roads

WINNIPEG (Aug. 18, 1999) — Manitoba will raise top speed limits from 90 km/h to 100 km/h on 83 provincial roads and trunk highways.

Manitoba Highways and Transportation Minister Darren Praznik said the decision would provide more consistent traffic flow for motorists. In many cases, the roads and highways that will see increased speed limits intersect with routes already posted at 100 km/h offering similar driving conditions.

The new 100 km/h maximum signs will be put in place over the course of the summer by Dept. of Highways crews.

Posted speed limits are based on a variety of factors including road surface conditions, the capability for drivers to see and react safely to changes in traffic flow, as well as the usual flow of traffic on a particular road or highway. “Our uppermost priority is always safety,” explained Praznik, “and safety interests can be enhanced by improving the consistency of regulations in comparable situations.”
