Manufacturers at the end of the tunnel: Stat Can

OTTAWA, (Feb. 4, 2004) — After overcoming a series of unexpected blows via mad cow disease, SARS, and a major power blackout in Ontario last year, Canadian manufacturers are now cautiously optimistic that there are finally some good times ahead.

Statistics Canada reported that manufacturers from all provinces are starting to see light at the end of the tunnel, as confidence improved and greater satisfaction was expressed for production, finished products inventory levels, and orders received.

Thirty per cent of 4,000 manufacturers surveyed by the agency expected to increase first-quarter production; only 15 per cent expected a decrease. Twenty-four per cent reported increased orders, compared with 20 per cent in October. Eighty-five per cent were content with their current finished product inventories; eight per cent found them too high and seven per cent said they were too low. And more than 80 per cent expected to maintain or add to their workforce in the next few months.
