Marine Atlantic needs to improve safety: Transportation board

NORTH SYDNEY, N.S. — A new Transportation Safety Board report says that Crown corp. Marine Atlantic must step-up safety aboard its ferry service.

An investigation looked at how the company handled a truck fire on one of the decks of the MV Joseph and Clara Smallwood in May 2003 before it arrived in Port aux Basques. The reports finds that the ferry’s emergency response capabilities are insufficient.

However, Marine Atlantic chairman Roger Flood told the Cape Breton Post the report vindicates the company. He did add that the company could do a better job in handling emergencies in the future.

A new safety program has been launched and the ships’ communications systems have been upgraded, the paper reports.
