Marine cargo service to set sail near Chatham

WALLACEBURG, Ont. – Corn and other agricultural cargo coming through Wallaceburg, Ont. could begin traveling via the Sydenham River in the next few weeks.

According to a report in the Chatham Daily News, the Norlake Transportation Co. is launching a drop-on, short sea shipping service in Chatham-Kent region. A test run with 200-ft “Mississippi-style” barges, pushed by tugs, is planned for next week, the newspaper reports.

A grain unloading system is being constructed on Bruinsma Company property on the riverbank in Wallaceburg.

While the main commodity targeted for marine transport is U.S. corn, sources say ethanol plants in Chatham and Sarnia are also potential customers for the barge system.

Marc Roszell, Kent director for the OCPA, said Monday that any plan to import U.S. corn would likely meet resistance from local farmers.
