Markel announces first-ever training conference

TORONTO, (April, 29, 2004) — Markel Professional Transport Training — the driver training arm of Markel Insurance — will host its first-ever national conference this spring.

This event — titled Safety and Innovation — will take place June 15 and 16, 2004 at Toronto’s Doubletree International Plaza hotel.

The Markel Safety and Innovation Conference will feature a Keynote address by Mark Seymour, CEO & president, Kriska Transportation.

Seminars include: The Link Between Essential Skills and Safety Performance and The New National Occupational Standard for Transportation Safety Professional, with Robin Doherty, director, Westcan Bulk Transport Ltd. and Linda Gauthier, executive director of the CTHRC; The Best Highway Safety Practices with Steven Piwowarski, divisional manager, Maine Office, U.S. DOT FMCSA; Surviving Today’s Business Environment with Gregory Rumble, president & COO, Contrans Income Fund; Driver Wellness and Fatigue Management Pilot Update with Enno Jacobson, vice president of risk management, Challenger Motor Freight; Driver Selection: Perception vs. Reality with Michel Lapointe, safety director, Dan Freight Systems; and moving Beyond Compliance to Excellence with Jim Little, vice president of risk management of Mullen Transportation Inc.

In addition, Roy Craigen of fleet consulting firm Transcom, will present a Special Pre-Conference “Transportation Management” Seminar, June 14th. This is a limited-seating event, available to early registrants only.
