Marta brings business alive and wins a prize
TORONTO — Marta Iwanek, 20, is in her third year of a four-year Journalism degree program at Toronto’s Ryerson University.
This week she was presented with the annual $1,000 Rolf Lockwood Scholarship, for excellence in business journalism.
Lockwood is one of the founders of Newcom Business Media, the company that produces this website.
In 2002, Lockwood was recognized by his colleagues in the Canadian Business Press as a leader when he was presented with the Harvey S. Southam Lifetime Achievement Award.
At that time and in his honor, Newcom President and co-founder Jim Glionna established the annual prize for a deserving Ryerson Journalism student. The prize goes to a student who in their second year of studies produces an outstanding piece of business journalism.
This year’s winner, Iwanek, wrote a story about the financial difficulties faced by The Toronto Women’s Bookstore.

Iwanek also won the Jay Sussman Memorial Award, given to the second-year student demonstrating excellence in political studies and journalism.
After the awards ceremony, the Mississauga, Ont., native told todaystrucking.com that when she entered journalism, she hadn’t intended on writing about business but once she began investigating the decision-making processes that go into keeping a foundering business alive, she became fascinated by the people involved.
“It really opened my eyes about that whole side of journalism,” she said.
She has also never set foot in a heavy-duty truck though, she said, her family is friends with John Iwaniura, the former-teacher/entrepreneur behind Caravan Logistics, of Oakville.
In addition to producing www.todaystrucking.com, Newcom publishes Today’s Trucking, highwaySTAR, Truck and Trailer, Transport Routier, Canadian Technician, Plumbing & HVAC, and Canadian Car Owner magazines.
Newcom also operates attendant websites for its publications, an employment service www.truckcareers.ca and the professional shows Truck World, ExpoCam and CamExpo.
