Martin names new transport minister

OTTAWA, (Dec. 15, 2003) — New Prime Minister Paul Martin wasted no time reshuffling his Cabinet after being sworn in late last week, dropping long-time Transport Minister David Collenette and appointing Tony Valeri to the portfolio.

Tony Valeri was first elected to Parliament in 1993 as a Liberal MP from Stoney Creek, Ont. He has served as a member of the Standing Committee on Finance, the Sub-Committee on International Trade, Trade Disputes and Investment, the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade, and Vice-Chair of the Standing Committee on Government Operations and Estimates.

In July 1997, he was appointed Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Finance, and completed his term in September 1999, when he was appointed to Chair the National Caucus Economic Development Committee.
